The applications on this page are 'essential' in the sense that they're the ones that the maintainer of these pages uses on a regular basis: they represent what I consider to be the best, and the best value in freeware, shareware and low-priced commercial software. This page only lists items costing $50 or less: in cases where the program that I use is actually a more expensive commercial item, you may find it listed as a possible 'alternative' to one of the items on this page.
