The starting point for this scene was the film "Smilla's Sense of Snow" which features some eerily lovely images from the Greenland ice-cap. Like the film (and the book too, come to that), this image is a nice idea that doesn't quite work.

The scene consists of a few terrains - mostly eroded, plus relief noise - and a water plane. The ice floes in the foreground were made by creating an image in Photoshop, filling it with grey, applying the Stained Glass filter and then bringing that into Bryce as a G2H map. The Stained Glass filter does a nice job of breaking things up into irregular polygons. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to get the sharp cleavage lines of real ice. Smilla would not be convinced.

I still think the title of the British translation - "Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow" - was better than the American - "Smilla's Sense of Snow". The French rendition, which translates as something like "Smilla's Love for Snow", misses the point entirely.
