Actually, it's possible that I don't mean Moquegua. I think the place I'm thinking of is in Chile, just north of Antofagasta. It looked something like this, only bleaker. And with less JPEG compression artifacts.

Comments:
An attempt to resurrect the bleak landscape of a place I saw from a bus heading south from Arica to Santiago, in Chile. I always remembered the name of the place as Moquegua, but Moquegua turns out to be a larger place, further north in Peru. Whatever, it began with 'M', was somewhere near Antofagasta, and looked like hell.
The colours of this image lend themselves particularly poorly to JPEG compression, and the resulting artifacts obliterate much of the detail. One of the casualties is the label of an abandoned soup can which I lovingly painted in PhotoShop before importing and wrapping around a hollow cylinder. All that effort for nothing.
