The caption is also slightly unsatisfactory. I might have done better to use lines from 'Going Underground' or 'Down in the tube station at midnight', both by The Jam. But although the Men at Work song is really about something else, the 'just have a look around' line is appropriate.
The image shows two naked figures (one male, one female) carrying spears and torches, exploring a deserted Underground station. There are two possible explanations; either some disaster has destroyed our 'civilisation', and the survivors are exploring the ruins of London, or there are people living beneath the city today, who come out only at night to explore the Underground network. You choose which explanation you prefer.
The image was also partly inspired by the paintings of Georges de la Tour, in which figures are illuminated by a single light-source. The addition of light sources in Bryce 2.1 makes this kind of image possible, and I wanted to try it out. The only problem is that the JPEG standard makes a nasty mess of mostly black images; you need to set the quality level very high to avoid compression artifacts. Georges de la Tour evidently never had this problem.
The figures were modelled in Poser, the station sign was drawn using PhotoShop. |
